Initially the increase was not taken too seriously by either by publishers or by book stores , however, no-one could ignore the huge sales on these items and since the recession has hit home, this has been a welcome source of revenue for bookshops and publishers alike. Although many still see this as a short term trend, it seems that the surge is not finished yet. Supported by their predilection for stylish but miniature recipes (canapés, hors d’oeuvres, starters and the like), some publishers are focusing in on this area for the longer term identity of their publishing list.
The public are choosy however and whilst objects of quality, distinction and style sell well, cheaper quality and poor finishing flop badly. The greater the perceived quality - the better the sales. Of course the French are very proud of their food heritage and more likely to place a higher standard and value on this kind of product.
